An endeavor we've taken on for the betterment of the Ultimate community as a whole is the merging of email lists, particuarly on Yahoogroups. Yahoogroups is a great tool, and lord knows we in the Ultimate community know what to do with it.
Sometimes, you can have too much of a good thing, and what we've seen on Yahoogroups is a little bit of "sprawl" in that there are too many lists out there serving the same Ultimate people and the same needs in our local area. Wouldn't it be great if you knew at all times what list to post to when you have some news - like a tournament announcement, pickup game update, carpool request, apartment inquiry - and you knew it was going to the maximum number of people who want to hear about it? And that everybody would get your message exactly once, not 6 times?
Yes, we at Bay Area Disc Association believe that would be great. To that end...
(Wed. September 23rd) Well, what can we say. Getting started on this phase in August did not happen. The webmaster decided to get some fresh air and chase some plastic for a change, and that's a good thing. You know what is a bad thing? It's playing pickup every week at Gilman and finding out you're about 3 years from being in real playing shape. Ah, well...we still have time.
We have determined that our friends in the East Bay, particularly those who have recenty played in the former East Bay Ultimate League (EBUL), would be next to go through the migration to the NEWS list. This work will be in preparation for the next installment of the East Bay Winter League, coming late fall / early winter 2009. We'll post more news when we have it.
(Wed. September 23rd) Attention former SFUC players! SF Winter League signups are coming soon. If you received our invite during the summer to join the NEWS list, but did not accept the invite, it's not too late. Either sign yourself up by following the instructions on the main page of the NEWS list or else send an email to bayareadisc-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Being on the NEWS list guarantees you'll hear the latest news when registrations open in October.
(Thu. August 6th) We're wrapping up the SFUC part of this effort right now, but a bit late getting started on the SFUL_Chat part. Will keep proceeding in August.
This Summer of 2009, we have, so far, set up the NEWS list and the COMMUNITY list for Bay Area Disc Association. The NEWS list is based on the former SFUL list, and the COMMUNITY list is based on the former SFUC list. If you are already a member of both lists, and want to remain subscribed to both of them, then you don't have to do anything at all. In fact, you may skip to the bottom of this page to the header "Expanding Your Reach and Ours."
Phase 1 of the Email List Consolidation project next concerns those of you are on one of these two lists, and not the other, and it also affects members of the SFUL_Chat list. Starting June 26, 2009:
NOTE: When we complete both mass migrations described above, then everybody will again be on his or her own to decide which of the two lists, NEWS and/or COMMUNITY, to remain subscribed to. We have taken on these migrations as a public service, conservatively guessing you want to continue receiving the same types of messages as you have in the past. We will not monitor or "force" memberships between these two lists again.
Do you have an Ultimate-related list on Yahoogroups that is already an all-comers, anybody-can-join type of list? Such as for pickup? Please consider merging your list members into our lists, as you can tap into the largest Ultimate-related list in the country. Let us know if you're interested in signing on with us at: webmaster (at) bayareadiscassociation (dot) org. We may consider taking on volunteers to share moderating duties with us.
