All donors will receive an acknowledgment letter from the Lance Armstrong Foundation, and if your donors donate online they will receive an automatic acknowledgement letter via email. We recommend that you fundraise primarily via the web, but if you receive checks or cash then see below for instructions.

Raising and Collecting Donations

Collect donations from family, friends, coworkers or local businesses. All players must raise $50 in donations but players are encouraged to raise more: there are awesome prizes if you do! (see below)
Credit Card
Each player will be able to access his or her personalized webpage that tracks donations received online. You will send the link with your personalized URL out to potential sponsors who can then donate online with a credit card.
Check or Cash
We recommend that you fundraise primarily via the web and credit cards, but if you receive a check then you can download and print a personalized PDF to submit the check to LAF. The PDF can be found on your personalized page at the bottom of the page, underneath the thermometer. Make sure that donors know to include your supporter ID on the memo line. Check donation amounts will be posted to your individual webpage within 2-3 weeks. If you receive cash donations, we suggest you deposit the cash into your account and make a credit card donation in the name of the donor on your webpage.

About the Lance Armstrong Foundation

It helps to know a little the Lance Armstrong Foundation prior to asking people to sponsor you and why you are playing in this tournament.

The Lance Armstrong Foundation fights for the 28 million people around the world living with cancer today. There can be (and should be) life after cancer for more people. That’s why LAF kicks in at the moment of diagnosis, giving people the resources and support they need to fight cancer head-on. LAF finds innovative ways to raise awareness, fund research and end the stigma about cancer that many survivors face. They connect people and communities to drive social change, and we call for state, national and world leaders to help fight this disease. LAF unites people to fight cancer and pursue an agenda focused on:

  • Prevention
  • Access to screening and care
  • Improvement of the quality of life for cancer survivors
  • Investment in research

Founded in 1997 by cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong, the LAF is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in Austin, Texas. More information is available at the LAF About Us and Media Room web pages.

Fundraising Tips

The Huck Cancer Ultimate Frisbee Tournament Team would like to help you in raising your pledges for the Tournament. Here are some helpful fundraising hints that will make reaching your fundraising goal a snap. Fundraising is always a challenge, and asking for money is, well, not always the easiest. But asking 15 people (family, friends, etc.) for $20 to support you in helping people with cancer may be an easier request as cancer is a pretty easy cause to support.

A good thing to remember is that people give money to people: they don't give money to causes. They will give money to you, because they trust your judgment, because you support the cause, and because you asked. So ask! The personal connection can do wonders for fund raising.

Tips to get started raising your $50 (or $250 or $1,000!)

  1. Be clear about why you are doing the Huck Cancer Frisbee Tournament. When you ask for contributions, share your personal reasons for getting involved in advocacy for people with cancer and their families and friends. You can also post your reason for doing the Huck Cancer Ultimate Frisbee Tournament on your personalized fundraising site that is on the Lance Armstrong Foundation website.
  2. Develop an email list. Think of everyone you know. Include family, friends, classmates, work associates, individuals in clubs and organizations you belong to, neighbors, people from your religious group, companies and corporations you are connected with, community businesses where you spend money (doctors, dentists, salons, delis, grocery stores, drug stores, health clubs), anyone who owes you a favor. If you are on Facebook it might help to browse through your Friends list to see who you could ask. Don't make up reasons to keep someone off of your list. Next to the names on your list write down the amount of money you're counting on them to pledge.
  3. Let them decide if they want to contribute or not. Most people are interested in supporting worthy causes, and if a monetary request comes from a friend, coworker or familiar face, they should be all the more willing to donate. Remember: people give money to people that they know.
  4. Be sure to ask the people on your list!
  5. Use your Facebook page to let your friends know that you are playing in the tournament. Status updates can alert friends to your fundraising progress.
  6. See our sample fundraising letter, which can be used to solicit donations.
  7. Follow up with your sponsors - this will let your sponsors know you are committed to this event. Send updates or newsletters about your training and/or fundraising progress.
  8. Find out about the Matching Fund Program at your job or that of your pledge sponsors. Employers will donate by matching the amount of money donated by an employee. These programs are a great way to meet and beat your own goals. Most companies have matching gift paperwork that requires Tax ID information and/or signatures from the LAF. Send your company's matching gift paperwork with the donation checks. They will return the paperwork back to the company and credit the matching gift money in your fundraising account. Let us know if you need assistance with this.
  9. If your employer doesn’t have a matching program, simply ask them for $50. Many corporate cultures encourage employee participation in charitable causes and are more than happy to support them through monetary contributions.?
  10. Remember, it really doesn't hurt to ask... You will find donations and generosity in some unexpected places. Here are a few creative ideas:
    • Ask local community groups such as churches and professional organizations if you can make a brief presentation. Many groups have newsletters in which you can print an announcement.
    • Hold a bake sale at work. Ask friends to bake goodies for you so you don't have to do all the baking yourself.
    • Ask the waiters in your favorite restaurant if they will donate a percentage of one day's tips. Or, if you work in a restaurant, ask your colleagues to donate tips to a pledge jar.
    • Hold a dinner party with a special theme for 10 of your friends. Donation: $50 a head. Spend no more than $20 a head on food and you'll have over $300 in pledges!
    • Send letters to the parents of kids on your child's sports (soccer, baseball, etc.) teams.
    • Contact the national chapter of your college fraternity or social organization to ask for a big donation. If you did not belong to a fraternity or sorority, ask someone who did to make the contact.
  11. Be sure to send a thank-you letter after the Tournament thanking your sponsors for their support and letting them know how you did. The Lance Armstrong Foundation will send an acknowledgment letter, but sponsors would love to hear from you directly. Use our Huck Cancer thank you letter, or create your own!
