Huck Cancer Tournament - March 6, 2010

You are all so awesome! We raised over $45,000 through LAF and then another $600+ from the raffle, bracelets, and other donations! Holy cow batman. Great job to all of us for kicking some serious cancer-ass!

You can download all your donor information from the LAF site by doing the following:

a. Login to your LAF page
b. Click on the "reports" tab
c. Click "choose columns" and select: email address, mailing address,however you want to contact them
d. then "Export XLS"

Many have walked, swam and biked for a cure to cancer, but isn’t it about time we just hucked the dang thing?!? The Huck Cancer Ultimate Frisbee Tournament is taking flight on Saturday, March 6th to raise money to help fight cancer in solidarity with our friend Eric Arons. Eric was suddenly diagnosed with a Grade 4 Glioblastoma Multiforme tumor this summer and, whether you know Eric or not, the Huck Cancer Ultimate Frisbee hat tourney is your opportunity to get involved in the fight against cancer.

The Goal

Raise $20,000 for cancer research and services as a group. Donations will go to the Lance Armstrong Foundation/LAF (Donate Here). Prizes and advantages on the field will be awarded to the top fundraisers.

The Details

Player participation involves the following:

• 2-Part Registration Process: Part 1) $50 registration fee to be submitted right here on bayareadisc.org; and Part 2) $50 minimum fundraising or personal donation (your choice) to be coordinated through our tournament fund on the Lance Armstrong Foundation web site.
• Additional fundraising for Lance Armstrong Foundation beyond the $50 minimum is strongly encouraged. We'll present you with clear instructions for Part 2 after you complete Part 1.
• When: Saturday March 6
• Where: Crocker Amazon fields in San Francisco
• 4 games of Mixed Gender play, 9 AM - 5 PM
• Teams drawn hat-style (no baggage requests)
• Party: After winning the game, participants will be expected to win the party at a location TBA.

The Story

Eric is a stalwart of the SF ultimate community. You might call him a legend. He has spent years giving of himself to the San Francisco community: volunteering with Trips for Kids, organizing clinics for beginning ultimate frisbee players, co-founding Dolores Park Movie Night, and much more. This summer, we were shocked when Eric was suddenly diagnosed with a Grade 4 Glioblastoma Multiforme tumor- brain cancer. How could we have imagined that our 40 year old friend who bikes regularly, plays ultimate, kayaks, and has a full social and work life, could get cancer? To spread Eric's spirit of giving back, his friends approached him about having this fundraising tournament in his honor. Eric says "huck it"!

The Cause

The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF). LAF funds cancer research and supports complementary care programs around the country. A great deal of their success stems from grassroots events like this. If you fundraise you will get the following:

• $250: 10 raffle tickets (raffle will take place at the party after the tourney)
• $251 - $500: priority registration for any Bay Area Disc Association league
• $501 - $999: complimentary registration for any Bay Area Disc Association league
• $1000 and above: two points you score a goal - you will receive a colored wristband, garter or headband that indicates that you are an "extra cool" player.

The Participants

All ultimate players are invited. You do not have to play the full day of tournament games to participate in this event. Former players and friends and family of players can all pitch in by donating to the Lance Armstrong Foundation. We also strongly encourage spectator attendance at this event, as we will have a variety of activities on the sidelines and in between games to entertain and inform you.

Can't Play, but Still Want to Participate?

If you are out of town, injured, or have previous commitments you can still participate in the following ways:

• Join the fund raising team at Huck Cancer fundraising page. You don't have to play to raise funds.
• Come to the party - take part in the raffle, drinks, and the usual antics.
• Come out to the fields and cheer us on. Nothing beats an afternoon of spirited heckling on the sidelines.
• Find your favorite player , and donate! They will be psyched!

The Huck Cancer Ultimate Frisbee Tournament was borne out of our community's love for our friend, Eric Arons. Eric is in the early stages of treatment for a Grade 4 Glioblastoma Multiforme tumor. He was diagnosed in July of 2009 and it was, of course, shocking to all of us. How can a 40 year old man who bikes regularly, plays ultimate frisbee weekly - if not more - and has a full social and work life get cancer? And the only indications leading up to his diagnosis were memory loss and anxiety? Unbelievable. As word got out about Eric's diagnosis, offers of help came pouring in; he received home cooked meals, brownies, hugs, even offers to go to radiation with him. When still others approached Eric about doing something "formal" in his honor, he unselfishly (and very characteristically) turned the spotlight away from him, and asked if it would be possible to set up some kind of fundraising event that would involve something fun. These simple ideas evolved rapidly into the tournament we present to you today.
